Future
Engineers of America. Originally begun by
National Society of Black Engineers. The mission is to
motivate and encourage young adults to pursue engineering degrees by exposing
them to positive role models and providing them with valuable tools and
resources to help them achieve that goal . They hold monthly sessions with students to introduce vital skills
that prepare them for engineering careers. These include public speaking,
resume writing, financial investing, and many others. Services are open to 9th-12th
graders and are free. Fieldtrips are included.

Lawson
WORKS - Lawson State Community College Career Tech Dual Enrollment Program–
High school students may enroll in career technical programs, including
automotive, occupational, advanced manufacturing, allied health, and
Business/CIS.
Students must have a GPA of 2.5 for most programs and 3.0 for health
profession programs. Scholarships are
available. Scholarship application
deadline is April 1 for summer term. See Ms. Henry for more information.
Summer Leaders Seminar at
West Point – Week-long program to develop leadership skills, learn about
college, prepare for success in college, and learn about life at a service
academy. Juniors must apply online

Business Academy -

10-day summer program for rising seniors interested in a career

. Requires a 3.4 GPA,
ACT 27 or PSAT 140. 4-year scholarships to Alabama in business to top performers. $350. Some scholarships

Young Water
Ambassadors – Birmingham water Works.
Program dates are June 14th through July 23. Students meet at Phillips High School. Hours are 8:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M. Students receive a stipend of $8.50 per

Southern

of Mississippi Summer College for High School Students – Admission
qualifications vary by program or institute desired. Institutes for juniors are available in art,
business, health professions, Spanish, journalism, liberal arts, and legal
studies. Programs (more intense than institutes, also for juniors) require a 25
ACT and include computer science, engineering, and the PACE Honors

Youth Leadership Programs Conference – Auburn University Montgomery,
May
30 – June 1, 2008. Mortimer Jordan may send one tenth
grader. Interested students should
submit a short essay entitled, “What is a Leader?” No cost to student, except for transportation
to Montgomery. Essay must be submitted
to Guidance by November 16.
Summer
Science Institute –
The goal is to prepare students for competitive careers in the science and
healthcare professions. 9th-11th
graders are eligible for a 2-week program in biology (BioTeach);
10th -11th graders are eligible for a 3-week program in
biochemistry (ChemTeach). Cost is $250 for BioTeach
and $350 for ChemTeach with some scholarships
available. 11th and 12th
graders are eligible for an 8-week student research internship. There is no cost for the intermship. Deadline:
March 31
Junior
Statesmen Program –
Georgetown, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, or Northwestern – Students take
demanding courses related to politics.

Governor’s School –
June 18-30, Samford University.
Juniors can apply. Some courses
taught are fine arts, film, web design, legal systems, research science, and
medicine. Admission is highly competitive. Requires 25 on ACT, 170 on
PSAT, or certain scores on other selected tests. Cost is $430, which includes room, board, and
tuition. Some scholarships are available

research Interns Program – Rising seniors work in a UAB research lab under the

University Freshman Forum presents “Tomorrow’s Leaders Today”, January
25-26. Cost is $30.
UAB
Mechanical Engineering’s Summer Institute
on Simulations and Enablimg Technologies –
in partnership with
NASA. June 16-20. Students participating in this one-week,
hands-on program will gain an understanding of computer simulations using
science and engineering principals and experience how these simulations can be
used to solve everyday problems.
Students will participate in team projects involving in-class training
and laboratory experiences.

UAB
School of Engineering’s Engineering Camp – July 14-18.
The one-week, hands-on program will introduce students to engineering
fundamentals and the disciplines of biomedical, civil, electrical, materials,
and mechanical engineering. Students will
participate in modules consisting of both in-class training and laboratory
experiences, to introduce engineering fundamentals and the engineering programs
at UAB. Cost $100. For
sophomores and juniors.

– Engineering Camp with opportunities to participate in cutting edge research,
academic enrichment, and engineering activities designed to show what engineers

Jacksonville
State University Tenth Annual Emerging Leaders Day on November 10. Learn leadership skills, learn about the
college admissions process, have lunch on campus. Students must furnish their own
transportation. If you would like to
apply to represent Mortimer Jordan, please see Ms. Bracewell. Absence counts as a fieldtrip. Deadline for submitting completed application
is
October 13.
Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership program. Troy University, May
28-30. Mortimer Jordan may send one
tenth grader. Interested students should
submit a short essay entitled, “What is a leader? What are the challenges you would face and
the rewards you would reap for being a leader?”
No cost to student, except for transportation to Troy. Essay must be submitted to Guidance by
December 1.
Youth
Leadership Forum on Medicine – 10-day summer program for students with at least
a 3.3 GPA and an interest in a medical career.
Programs in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los
Angeles, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Washington, DC. Tuition is approximately $2,200, with some
scholarships offered. If interested, see
counselor by November 1 to be nominated.
Then you will receive detailed information in the mail, without
obligation. Jordan students who have
attended in the past have found it a worthwhile experience.
Discover Card
Scholarship – Any
current high school junior who has at least a 2.75 cumulative
GPA, demonstrates accomplishments in community service and leadership and has
faced a significant roadblock or challenge may apply. Applications for the 2009 program may be
submitted at http://www.discoverfinancial.com/community/scholarship.shtml December 1, 2008, and January 31, 2009.
Jefferson
County Junior Miss Program – Based upon interview, talent, scholastics,
self-expression, and fitness. A total of
$15,850 in scholarships was awarded last year to Jefferson County
participants. Junior girls may download
an application at www.jefcojrmiss.org. Additional information can be found by
calling the 24-hour voice mail number, 868-8686 and leaving name and
number. Number of participants is
limited. Apply as soon as possible.
University of Mississippi Lott Leadership Institute, for current
juniors – Earn 6 hours of college credit in political science and speech. Sessions are May
31-July 3 or June 27-July 30. $600 fee
includes a required trip to Washington, D.C.
Other expenses are covered by a scholarship. Juniors must have 15 core credits and 3.5
GPA. An ACT of 25 or above increases
chances of being accepted. You must be
nominated by a counselor. Let Ms. Henry
know you are interested before January 31.
