GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE NOW

 

Wendy’s High School Heisman – If you have at least a 3.0 GPA and participate in at least one qualifying sport, you are eligible to apply for the Wendy’s Heisman Award.   It is based upon excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.   Go to   www.wendysheisman.com   Deadline is 5:00 P.M. October 3.  If you have questions, you may send an e-mail to   wendys@act.org.  List Sue Henry (shenry@jefcoed.com)as the verifying person and let Ms. Henry know when you have applied because completed applications must be verified on-line by your school counselor.

 

AES Engineering Scholarship - Awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility.  You are not required to be taking Engineering courses to be eligible.  Students must submit an essay of no more than 1000 words in answer to one of these two questions:  1. If you had the authority to change your school in a positive way, what specific changes would you make?
2. How has your family background affected the way you see the world?  Amount of award: $500.  Submit essay to: scholarships@aesengineers.com . Be sure to include your full name as well as the name of the school you are attending in 2010/11 and your plans for 2011/12. Deadline:

Coca-Cola Scholarship - apply online at  www.coca-colascholars.org  Requires a 3.0 GPA.  School code:  011925  

Deadline:  October 31

 

Prudential Spirit of Community Award - Based upon community service.  Seniors may fill out the form online at http://spirit.prudential.com  or  www.principals.org/spirit.  The form must be printed out, signed, and submitted to Ms. Henry by November 1, 2010.  One winner of the award is chosen to represent Mortimer Jordan.  That winner competes for scholarships and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.    Deadline for copy of completed online form to be returned to Ms. Henry: November 1.

 

Principal’s Leadership Award - Mortimer Jordan may select one senior to enter this competition.  Students will turn in a list of all leadership activities and write a paragraph entitled “What leadership Means to Me.”  Submit to Ms. Henry by November 15.  Then a committee of teachers and the principal will select the MJ nominee from all applications turned in.

The dates listed are last year’s dates.  As information is sent to guidance, these will be updated and moved to current listings.  Often, on-line scholarship organizations update their websites a week or two before they mail information to the guidance office.  If a scholarship is of particular interest, students may want to check the website

now. 

 

VFW Voice of America Scholarship - An audio-taped essay between 3 and 5 minutes on the topic “Does America Still Have Heroes?"  must be submitted to Ms. Henry.  It must be accompanied by a typewritten script.  The local department has decided that all entries will be accepted.  Since entries must be received by the department by November 1, please turn in all tapes and transcripts to Ms. Henry by October 29.    See Ms. Henry for brochure.

 

Horatio Alger Association – based upon achievement, activities, and critical financial need. www.horatioalger.org/scholarships   Deadline:  October 30

 

 

Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award - One student will be selected from Mortimer Jordan to enter the local contest. Obtain application from guidance.  The quality of the written responses on the application will be the biggest factor in selecting school winner. The school winner will then write an additional essay at school on a topic to be announced.  Form must be returned by November 5.

 

 

AXA Achievement Scholarship – Based upon ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, Apply online at www.axa-achievement.com   December 15

 

BLSA Scholarship – Based on financial need (50%), GPA (40%), accomplishments (10%), recommendation from business education teacher.  See Ms. Henry for application.  Deadline:  Must be postmarked by January 8 and received by January 11.

            

Ron Brown Scholar Program – This program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need.  Go to www.ronbrown.org for details.  Deadline:  January 9.

 

John F. Kennedy Profile in courage Essay Contest. Students are asked to write an original and creative essay of less than 1,000 words that demonstrates an understanding of political courage as described by John F. Kennedy in Profiles in Courage.  Studentys must apply on-line at www.jfklibrary.org.  Deadline:  January 9, 2010

 

Gates Millennium Scholars – Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Must be a minority student with an unweighted GPA of 3.3 or above, proven leadership abilities, and financial need.   www.gmsp.org   Must submit online application by January 11. 

 

Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship – For students who plan to pursue a career in public service.  Some scholarships are available only to Pennsylvania residents, but some are national.  Go to www.gwcf.org .  Applications must be received by January 11.

 

Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest – Students must submit original photo, artwork or computer graphics for the front of a greeting card.  Go to http://www.gallerycollection.com/greetingcardscontestscontests.htm .  Deadline:  January 15

 

SAE Engineering Scholarships - Student must plan to attend an accredited engineering school. Requirements vary for particular scholarships.  Scholarships funded directly through the SAE Foundation have a postmark deadline of January 15.  University-sponsored SAE scholarships deadlines vary.  Most require at least a 27 on the ACT and at least a 3.25 GPA. The J. Craig and Page T. Smith “First in Family” Scholarship – Based upon achievement, community service, and need.  Extra consideration is given for students who are the first in their families to attend college.  Go to www.smithscholarships.com and submit online.  Ms. Henry has also made hard copies which are available in guidance.  Deadline:  January 15

 

Linly-Heflin - Scholarship is for women attending a four-year, SACS-accredited Alabama college.  Minimum ACT is 23, and applicant must have good grades and financial need.  Heavy emphasis is placed on the interview.  Applications may be downloaded at  www.linly-heflin.org Deadline:  January 15

 

Wal-Mart – Go to http://walmartstores.com/communitygiving/8736.aspx  for information and to apply. The Sam Walton Community Scholarship is for students whose parents DO NOT work at Wal-mart.  The access code SWCS. Deadline:  January 29

 

Burger King Scholars - Students must have GPA of at least 2.5, financial need, participation in community service or co-curricular activities, and work an average of 15 hour per week, 40 weeks per year.  Although student must be employed to apply, he/she need not work for Burger King.  Apply online at www.haveityourway.com     Deadline: February 1

 

American Legion Oratorical Contests – Go to www.americanlegionalabama.org for preliminary information. Students must prepare an 8 to 10 minute oration on some phase of the Constitution of the United States, and then be prepared to make a 3-minute extemporaneous speech on one of four assigned topics.   The area contest will be held at the end of January or the first of February, but students should begin working on it now.    See Ms. Henry if interested.

 

Colonel’s Scholars – Students must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher and plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an Alabama college.  However, students may begin their college careers at a two-year school.  Financial need is a factor.  Students may complete applications online at www.kfcscholars.org  The website will open on December 1 and close February 10.

 

Best Buy Scholarship – Based on community service and academic achievement.  Go to  www.bestbuy.com/scholarships Deadline:  February 15

 

McKelvey Foundation Scholarship – For students who operate their own for-profit businesses while still in high school. Must have at least one employee, even if part time.  Go to www.mckelveyfoundation.org:  January 25

 

Yvonne Ballantine Memorial Reflections Scholarship $500.00.  Student must participate in PTA Reflections Program which requires the submission of an original work of art in literature, visual arts, musical composition, photography, dance choreography, or film.  The scholarship competition requires two additional works of art.  Ms. Hyatt, Mr. Belcher, Ms. Heron, Mr. Cagle, and Ms. Chandler have the details and forms, or see Ms. Henry.  Deadline for submission of two works of art:  Postmarked by February 1, 2009  

American Association of Blacks in Energy – Must major in engineering, environmental studies, mathematics, business, or the physical sciences, and be a member of a minority group which is underrepresented in these fields.  Applications available in guidance.  Deadline:  February 6

 

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Scholarship – Males or females may apply, GPA 3.5 and above, interview required.  Some of the awards are needs-based.  Essay:  “The Effect of Race and Gender in the 2008 Presidential Election.”  Mortimer Jordan may select two students.  If interested, your application and essay should be turned in to Ms. Henry by March 7. 

 

Mildred, Mack, and Blanche Stewart Teacher Education Scholarship: For students who plan to major in teaching at UAB.   Pick up an application from guidance or go to  www.uab.edu and find the school of education.  Under prospective students, go to scholarships for information.

Mensa Scholarship – Essay of not more than 550 words explaining student’s career, academic, and/or vocational goals.  Applications in guidance.  Deadline: January 16

 

American Cancer Society - Must be a survivor of cancer.  Go to www.cancer.org for an application packet.  Heavy emphasis on personal statement, GPA 2.5.  Deadline:  February 1

 

Imagine Your Future In Agriculture – For farm youths pursuing a career in agriculture.  Go to www.monsanto.com or www.nafb.com .  Deadline:  February 17

 

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program – Based upon ACT or other standardized test, high school grades with extra emphasis on honors and AP classes, leadership ability, involvement, goals.  Mortimer Jordan may submit two nominations.  Applications are in guidance, and must be returned to Ms. Henry by March 2.  Deadline for school to submit final nominees:  March 9

 

USA Today Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Scholarship (SAMMY) - based upon academics, athletics, leadership, community service, and milk experience.  Go to www.bodybymilk.com   Deadline:  March 12

 

Alabama Home Builders Foundation - Planned field of study must be construction-related—example: plumbing, electrical technology, carpentry, architecture, etc.  Additional consideration will be given to students who plan to study in the two-year trades and those four-year students already accepted into their construction-related intended field of study.  Go to www.ahbfoundation.org

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International Scholarship Program - Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Ms. Senior Alabama Scholarship – Applications in guidance.  Young women may submit application and essay of 250-300 word on senior adult woman (60 or older) who has been a significant role model.  Applications are available in guidance, or go to  www.mssenioralabama.com.  Deadline:  March 25

 

National Society of Black Engineers - The mission of NSBE is to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers.  Factors considered are professionalism, motivation, leadership, initiative, and personal achievement.  Applications are available in guidance.  Deadline:  March 31

 

Penguin Classic Essay Contest - Students must read a selected classic and write an essay on one of four assigned topics.  This year’s novel is War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells.  See guidance for the essay topics and instructions.  Essays must be submitted to Ms. Henry by April 1. 

 

Women’s Alabama Golf Association – Based upon need, ACT at least 22.  For women who play golf as a hobby or as a school sport. Applications in guidance or go to womensalabamagolf.com.  Deadline:  April 1

 

Lady Legacy Scholarship Foundation - For amateur female golfers.  Based upon financial need, academics, activities, recommendations, and a short essay.  Deadline:  April 1

 

American Society of Civil Engineers - Must attend an accredited Alabama civil engineering program.  See Ms. Henry for the application.  Deadline:  April 3

 

Magnolia Festival Scholarship – Sponsored by Gardendale Chamber of Commerce. Go to www.magnoliafestival.org.  Forms also available in guidance.  Volunteering at the Magnolia Festival is a requirement.  Deadline:  Must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, by

MJHS Alumni, Peter Tom Willis, Sid Reno, Burkett, - Applications available in guidance after February 1.  A copy of the front page of the IRS 1040 form is required for proof of income for Alumni, Peter Tom, and Sid Reno.  One copy will suffice for all three scholarships.  This copy seen by only one person and is shredded as soon as application information is verified.  Applications are assigned a number and given to the Alumni Association with all names removed.  Deadline:  April 6

 

Jefferson County PTA Council scholarship - Applications in guidance.  Completed application, picture, and two letters of recommendation from individuals outside the school must be returned to guidance by April 7.  Transcripts, ACT, and school recommendations will be attached and the package delivered by the April 12 deadline.  Remember, we must receive all information by April 7 in order to process the large number of applications we receive.

PTSA Scholarships – MJHS chapter scholarship.  Requires essay.  Pick up application in guidance.

Herb Hanes Scholarship Fund - $2,500.  Must be student athlete.  Requires short essay on how “participation in athletic activities has benefited you and why this scholarship would be important to you.”  Pick up applications in Guidance.  Students may mail the applications themselves or turn them in to Guidance by April 15th.  Must be RECEIVED by scholarship committee  by April 19. 

 

Mortimer Jordan Athletic Boosters Scholarship – Parents must be members of Booster Club.  Two $1000 awards each year.

Applications are available in guidance.  Deadline:  Must be turned in to guidance by 3:00 by Friday, April 23.

 

Ayn Rand Essay Contest - Contestants must read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand and write an essay on one of three topics.  Go to www.aynrandeducation.com   There is also an Atlas Shrugged essay contest detailed on the same website.  Deadline:  April 25

 

Alabama Law Foundation Kids Chance Scholarship Fund provides aid to students whose parent was killed or permanently and totally disabled in an on-the-job accident.  Go to www.alfinc.org  Deadline:  May 1

Alabama organized Labor Awards Foundation Scholarships – Parent must be a union member.  Essay required:  “U.S. Labor productivity has increased continuously since the 1950’s, yet real wages for workers have decreased steadily since 1973.  How can labor unions reverse this trend and put wages and benefits back in line with productivity and profits?” Pick up application in guidance.   Deadline:  May 28

 

American Legion Post 255 Scholarship – Parent or grandparent must have served in the military. Must write essay explaining why scholarship is deserved and explaining relationship to military. See guidance to receive a flyer.  Deadline:  June 1

 

American Association of University Women – Female seniors who plan to attend college in Alabama may apply.  Based upon need and character.  Applications are in guidance.  Requires two letters of recommendation.  Deadline:  June 10

Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama - Various kinds  of financial aid available for students who demonstrate financial need and have a tribal card as proof of Native American heritage.  See Ms. Henry for information.

 

2006 Holocaust Remembrance - Essay contest.  Go to www.holocaust.hklaw.com  Deadline: April 30

 

Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association – Scholarships for children of active members.  $500 each.  Contact the AHSADCA for application.  Deadline:  May 1  

 

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), 2009 Alabama-Mississippi Section Engineering Scholarships -  Applications available at www.al-ms-aiaa.org (The AIAA AL-MS Section Home Page) or from the guidance office.  Applicants must plan to attend an ABET-accredited university in the AL-MS section area.  Deadline:  May 17

 

District Five Alabama Association Of School Boards Fine Arts Scholarship - $500 scholarships.  Must have 4.0 GPA in fine arts classes and a 3.2 GPA overall.  A 300-word essay on the topic: “My Interest in Fine Arts.  See your fine arts teacher for an application.  Deadline:  June 1

Berea College - Berea is a small non-denominational Christian college in Kentucky where all students receive scholarships.  Most family incomes fall between $10,000 and $50,000 and most students score 22-30 on ACT.  Interested students must notify Ms. Henry by November 30 for a nomination.  See Ms. Henry

Montevallo - $3000 per academic year available to valedictorians, salutatorians, or students with a 4.0 GPA and above, first-come, first-served basis.  Apply early.

Samford University - Kenny Morgan Scholarship.  About 2,000 per year, renewable for 4 years. Deadline: Postmarked by February 12

University of Alabama Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship – Must be accepted to UA, have at least a 3.0 GPA, be the first of the immediate family to attend a 4-year university, and demonstrate financial need.  For information and to apply, go to http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/   Student should apply as soon as possible and submit a FAFSA form.  Deadline: February 4.

 

University of Alabama Art Scholarship - Should apply for admission now. Portfolio and scholarship application due in March

 

University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance Scholarship - Application Deadline:  February Auditions also in February

 

University of South Alabama Physics Scholarship – Full tuition and fees – See Ms. Henry for application information.  Deadline:  Priority given to applications received by January 15

 

University of South Alabama  Computer Science Scholarship – 10  $5,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen entering USA in the Fall semester, 2010, and pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Information Technology. Students with a composite ACT score of 29 or higher or equivalent SAT score Or Students graduating high school with an Honors diploma are eligible to apply. Deadline:  December 1

 

Virginia College - Several scholarships are available in career/technical fields including culinary arts.  See counselor or contact Virginia College at 943- 2079.  VC will also match certain other scholarships up to $1000 for students who attend Virginia College.  January 1

 

Samford University - Beeson Exceptional Scholars Program.  MJ may nominate one student. Past winners have averaged 31 on ACT with a GPA of 4.0 or higher.  Interested students must notify Ms. Henry by November 1.

 

University of Virginia – Jefferson Scholars Foundation – All expenses paid including study abroad after second year.  Very competitive, prestigious award.  Students must see Mrs. Henry by October 28 if interested in becoming the Mortimer Jordan nominee.

Central Alabama Chapter Independent Electrical Contractors Training program – Summer jobs, training scholarships and help finding jobs for graduates who are interested in becoming electricians.  See Ms. Henry or call Byron McCain at 250-7252 as soon as possible.
